with which I follow the road of the Family for a Century

29. Early Days at the Farm Home.

In the early 1880s Grandpa and Grandma Garton began their wedded life on a farm in the Caleb Creek bottoms west of the Seven Oaks School. On this farm they lived in a log cabin and it was here they laid away their first-born, little 'Buddy' and here Hamilton, Ella and Grace were born. Changing fortunes made it seem best to move from this farm to the present home place and so the scenes of their childhood and the family were changed. It was on the first farm and possibly after they moved that Grandpa worked a yoke of oxen which were about the last use made of such work animals in that neighborhood. All of you are familiar with the old ox yoke to be seen today in the top of the smoke house at the home. So our family history runs easily back to the days when log cabins and yokes of oxen were the everyday institutions of Iowa farmers.
